Gatekeepers

In her wonderful book Gathering Moss, scientist and Indigenous writer Robin Wall Kimmerer explores traditional ways of interpreting the world. She writes, “A thing cannot be understood until it is known by all four aspects of our being: mind, body, emotion, and spirit.” To truly understand the world around us, everyday objects, places, and ideas must be seen and contemplated through multiple lenses.

This project is driven by the aspect of understanding that relates to spirit. In each piece, you will encounter the spirit of a particular thing or place—a depiction and a story of who I understand them to be and what I believe they represent. I call them the Keepers.

It is my heartfelt wish that these pieces inspire you to look more closely at the places and spaces that surround you—those you know and that, in turn, know you. May they encourage you to contemplate them in their fullest form, through all the realms of your understanding.
